James was born and raised in Hong Kong with a degree in Economics. After graduation from Hong Kong University in 1975 , James started his career as audit accountant for Arthur Andersen, then import manager for Li &Fung Trading. In 1984, upon emigration to Canada, James was transferred by Citibank Hong Kong to Citibank Canada as unit head in Group Finance and later promoted to VP in charge of offshore banking and China town branches in Vancouver and Toronto. He then shifted to the real estate sector to work for Royal Lepage in property investments in Toronto, then in property developments for companies in Hong Kong and Shanghai. James later on joined the Hong Kong Dah Chong Hong Group as General Manager-China Operations to station in Shanghai to oversee the Group businesses in China, including trading and distributions in food, electrical appliances, automobiles; manufacturing in chocolates and poultry products ; and restaurants businesses. Subsequently, he joined HSBC as SVP in private banking in Hong Kong and China, then Maxdo Group as CFO and Executive director , looking after the Group’s investment projects in China. Upon retirement in the early 2010 , James engages in occasional business consultancy work, particularly for foreign companies with interests in China. James has also been very active in taking up voluntary social capacities , including former Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Business Association in Shanghai , former member of the CPPCC for the Changsha government, currently Vice Chairman of the Changsha Overseas Friendship Association and the Overseas Director of the Chinese Investment & Business Alliance of Canada etc. James was former member of the Advisory Board of the Gustavson School of Business and currently with the Advisory Board of the Beedie School of Business.
